Here's another of the new Karen pictures I promised.

This picture follows on from this older picture of Karen which shows Karen being visited in hospital a few days after her final amputations. This is a few weeks later, and her rehabilitation is well on the way. Both she and Muenda, her occupational therapist, are delighted with her progress. Her core strength and her balance are getting really good now as the length of time she can spend on the balance ball without Muenda's support proves.

With the help of Muenda and the other rehabilitation staff she's learning to move about on her own, wash and even partly dress herself, and is feeling far less dependent than she'd feared at first. She's actually begun to enjoy the challenge of being active and gaining back more and more of her independence.

Karen has such a fetish for amputation, will we ever get to see her as a hemicorp?

Anything's possible, I suppose. But probably not. :)

Amazing-looking scene, she looks like she has a really positive attitude, and the pose really makes it look like she has to put effort into keeping balance, great job ; )

She's even more adorable than she was on her previous "incarnation". Her expression is particularly cute on this picture (it's a good thing you made a high resolution picture, it allows to zoom on her lovely face).

Her hair is fantastic (not only the color !). The spots on her skin are nice too (they weren't very visible before).

It's a wonderful idea for the scene. And a very good pose ... I'm almost seeing her moving :-) !

She indeed seems to enjoy herself, with perhaps a little bit of sadness ... just as it should be, I imagine, when you are starting to have some success in doing what you thought you would never be able to do again.

Thanks Tom. I wanted to try and depict her as she was just off-balance and starting to lean sideways to counter the loss of equilibrium. I remembered seeing a short video of a limbless person balancing in just this way a few years back as part of their rehabilitation. As Maurice mentioned earlier, it was probably the young person referenced on You Tube as Malgosia (although there seem to be several variations of her actual name). I found the video fascinating, as she was so active and almost agile and I've had this scene or one like it in my head ever since.

She addapted very well to the rehab, it seems to be, and she's enjoying a lot.

I cannot understand how happy I feel to see Karen again, and I hope to see even more of her in the future.

Thanks for showing us more of her.

I kind of like the inclusion of those totally irrelevant posters on the wall :)

Haha! Well, it seemed likely that the session would be taking place in a normal rehabilitation centre and that the majority of the people who used the room would have nothing like the level of disability that Karen has. And that the posters would be there for those people... I must admit the incongruity of them contrasted with Karen's limblessness did strike me as happily ironic! :)

Great ! :+favlove: It reminds me of a similar scene, a real one, featuring the DSD/DHD Polish amputee-from-birth girl Malgosia doing the same. As far as I remember, Malgosia needed the helping hand of her therapist to keep her balance on the ball.

Maurice :)

Ah! Thank you Maurice, that must be where I remembered it from. I knew I'd seen this method of developing a limbless person's balance somewhere before a long while ago, but couldn't remember where!

make google image search through that site with keyword 'Malgosia wojsa'.
I also have videos that are not on youtube, so please send me a note if you want to.
(I think that it still existed in China's video site, but the picture quality is bad.)
